On their own, electronic components are simple objects that can perform only a very limited range
of tasks. However, when these simple components are joined together, they combine to produce
circuits that can carry out useful tasks. These circuits are the building blocks that enable mobile
phones, computers and the internet, as well as all other electronic equipment, to function correctly.
In this unit, you will learn how to join a range of electronic components together to make circuits
that perform a range of functions. You will learn how to use information to correctly identify
components and connect them in the correct positions. You will use a range of circuit assembly
techniques, including breadboards that allow ideas to be quickly tested and printed circuit boards
(PCBs) used in products you can buy. All of these tasks will need to be performed in a safe way.
The transferable and sector skills you develop in this unit can enable you to progress to further
learning. They will also support you in completing the core skills units in Group A of the
qualification.
